Use metaphors. Innovators’ metaphorical thoughts help form analogies and bridge conceptual gaps.212 Metaphors are comparing two unlike objects by suggesting that one object is figuratively like another (like “time is money”).213 Thinking metaphorically enables seeing things from new perspectives, which leads to more unique synthesis.214 It compels boundary-crossing comparisons and thinking outside existing boundaries of a subject, which further enhances outbox and newbox thinking, which also helps promote creations by grabbing the audience's attention.215 Thus, using metaphors is an effective skill for the last stage of an ACP, the promotion stage.216 Metaphors are easy to understand and create vivid images in the audience's mind. Therefore, they are persuasive and memorable especially when simple, catchy, informative, and surprising.217 They are even more memorable when appealing to multiple senses.218

Practice using metaphors: Develop metaphors from your CPI that can hint at who you are or what you are passionate about (like my gardening metaphor for creativity development or cactus metaphor for creative attitudes). Use animals or symbols as metaphors to describe a story (like the journey of the pen that signed the Declaration of Independence—explaining how and what the pen did and how it changed many lives).
